The Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act seeks to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline by shifting how the federal government invests in school safety. The bill prohibits the use of federal funds for maintaining and growing police presence in schools and establishes a $5 billion grant program to support schools that choose to invest in counselors, nurses, mental health professionals, and trauma-informed staff. Youth organizations, like Leaders Igniting Transformation Action Fund (LIT AF) and Latinos Unidos Siempre (LUS), are prime examples of the possibility of liberatory wins when our communities participate in their school board elections. In 2019, LIT AF decided to educate the community and escalate their school board participation—galvanizing voters to approve a referendum that infused $87 million into Milwaukee Public Schools! For years, Latinos Unidos Siempre (LUS) has employed a combination of protests, marches, and direct actions to uplift their call for police-free schools.
